Canon EOS 7D: Technology

Canon CMOS sensor
CMOSsensoreCanon EOS 7D has a new 18-megapixel CMOS sensor with gapless technology that provides excellent results at low and high sensitivity, as well as improved image quality. The sensor is APS-C (22,4 x14, 9 mm) and produces an angle of effective range with magnification factor of 1.6x compared to the nominal focal length lens.

CanonEOS7D01The sensor has a small circuit with an increased sensitivity and greater efficiency of photo diodes, which lets you take both at high ISO values that contains the noise, and to avoid overload when shooting in bright conditions. The ISO range (100 – 6400) is expandable up to 12,800 to allow photographers to capture subjects in their natural light, without using the flash. The sensor includes micro lenses seamless, placed even closer to the past photo diodes. These technological advances, developed and manufactured by Canon, improve the signal to noise ratio, creating a very clean images at high ISO values.

AF system with AF 19 cross-Spot

EOS 7D AF

The autofocus system has been completely redesigned using the same architecture as the EOS-1 series and includes a separate processor to handle the calculations for autofocus. This, combined with AI Servo II, allows EOS 7D to offer a reliable and accurate focusing even with continuous shooting at 8 fps. Unique element in its class, all 19 AF sensor points are cross-type targets with f/5.6 or brighter, a feature that allows you to follow the subject with accuracy and speed throughout the frame.

EOS 7D Spot AF also incorporates a new method that uses a small area of the sensor to determine the focus. This is useful for small entities and when the details in the background can distract the AF sensor. It is also this zone AF mode, which restricts the automatic selection to one of five zones, allowing the photographer to limit the automatic recognition autofocus to a single area.

Measurement system iFCL to 63 areas with double-layer sensor
The system uses information from iFCL focus, color and luminance to determine exposed images with constant results. All points of focus to provide information on the distance measuring system to determine the proximity to the subject and allow the algorithm to take them into account result in exposure. EOS 7D has a measuring sensor with 63 completely new areas, some of which overlapped the 19 AF points. Typically, the sensor measurements are more sensitive to red and green, which may cause a slight overexposure. EOS 7D takes this into account double counting leading to a sensor layer, the first is sensitive to red and green and the second in blue and green. The algorithm thencompares the measured level of the two layers and adjusts the reading.

1x magnification viewfinder, cover 100% and built-in LCD
EOS 7D has a target of high quality with a coverage of 100% and zoom 1x, a first for EOS, making it simply perfect for framing. The viewfinder uses a prism with anti-glare technology and ocular inspired by EOS-1 series. The viewfinder of the EOS 7D does not have interchangeable focusing screens, but instead there is an LCD screen transmitter – another record EOS – whereby it is easier and easier to use the viewfinder itself. Thanks to advances in technology, Canon was also able to further enhance the display. The new feature, which can be made visible (in red), even on dark backgrounds, allows sovrimprimere request the reticle on the screen, the circle spot metering and AF points.

EOS Movie for Full HD movies
EOS 7D has a better video function that allows users to record Full HD video with selectable frame rates and full manual control through direct access to settings with dedicated keys. The autofocus can now be activated either by pressing the shutter button halfway or by using the AF-ON button as before. The exhibition of films can be controlled automatically or in manual mode with full control of shutter speed and aperture. You can also select a frame rate from: 30 (29.97), 25 and 24 (23.976), with 60 (59.94) and 50 available at 720p. ISO can be set manually or automatically in the range 100-6400 and is expandable up to 12800 ISO even in video mode. EOS 7D also allows users to crop and cut your footage directly into the engine.

Dual DIGIC 4 processor
EOS 7D has a dual DIGIC 4, the power of two processors allows the development of more advanced algorithms, allowing the camera to get a burst in continuous shooting at up to 18 megapixels 8fps with gusts up to 15 shots in RAW and 126 in JPEG.

7DDIGIC4

DIGIC 4 remove the noise that afflicts the chrominance and luminance reduces to, to allow to obtain images very clean even at high ISO. Even at ISO 6400 the noise levels are similar to those of ISO 1600 with the DIGIC III. The Auto Lighting Optimiser is now available during the exhibition guide, with no loss of performance.

The DIGIC 4 processor also use the cards allow UDMA (mode 6) to allow you to use the camera at full speed, which gives faculty EOS 7D exploit the faster cards available.

Clear View II
CanonEOS7DBThe 3-inch LCD monitor EOS 7D has 920,000 dot (VGA resolution) with a viewing angle of 160 ?. Clear View II is designed to fight the blaze from the air by removing the protective layer of the LCD display and liquid crystal. The space in which this was the air was filled with an optical material elastic. This has the effect of suppressing the reflections from the surface of liquid crystal caused by the passage of light through materials that have different refractive indices. In order to protect the LCD from scratches, the Clear View LCD II features a hardened glass cover material. How about EOS 5D Mark II, an ambient light sensor on the side of the screen automatically adjusts the brightness of the LCD according to external lighting.

EOS Integrated Cleaning System
The EOS Integrated Cleaning System prevents the formation of dust on the sensor in three ways: it reduces, repels and removes it.

• Reduce – Internal camera mechanisms are designed so as to reduce dust generation and to prevent infiltration. The use of the new cover of the camera body prevents such training.

. Repel – Anti-static technologies are applied to low-pass filter positioned in front of the sensor that attracts more dust. Was also implemented a fluoride treatment in the area in front of the shutter

• Remove – Self-Cleaning Sensor Unit uses high frequency vibrations to remove dust from the low-pass filter for approximately one second after each start up. To be able to take pictures immediately after the opening, this feature can be turned off immediately whenever you press the shutter button.

Canon has also designed the Dust Delete Data that can detect and map the presence of dust and or streaks on the sensor. These can be deleted automatically after the shoot, thanks to a feature in this latest version of Digital Photo Professional software.

Picture Style
Picture Style settings simplify the control in-camera image quality. They can be likened to different film types, each of which provides a different effect. For each pre-selected setting, the photographer controls sharpness, contrast, color tone and saturation. The default configuration of the camera allows you to use JPEG images at once, without resorting to other menu settings. The Picture Style presets applied to RAW images can be revised with Canon Digital Photo Professional software.

The six presets include:

• Standard – for crisp and vibrant images

• Portrait – optimizes color tone and saturation, to obtain nice skin tones

• Landscape – for shades of green and blue on, to confer with mountains, trees and sections of buildings contours determined

• Neutral – ideal for post-processing

• Faithful – adjusts color to match those of the subject, for shots with a color temperature of 5200K

• Monochrome – for black and white shooting with a wide range of filter effects (yellow, orange, red and green) and toning effects (sepia, blue, purple and green).

You can store a maximum of three settings Picture Style can also be downloaded from Canon site and of course create an almost infinite number with the software supplied Picture Style Editor.

Digital Photo Professional Software
Digital Photo Professional allows fast processing and high image quality RAW. Processing with Digital Photo Professional allows real-time visualization and application immediate changes to files, in addition to control variables such as white balance, dynamic range, exposure compensation, color and tone curves . The latest features added to the program include the correction of vignetting, which counteracts the reduction of brightness of images obtained with peripheral targets. The geometric and chromatic aberration correction allows then to improve different kinds of phenomena caused by certain optical properties. Users can also control the shadows and highlights of an image, reducing the problems arising from areas that are “burned” with loss of detail. Digital Photo Professional also handles noise reduction in post production in the parameter luminance and chrome Ordinance in different ways. Finally, you can also get a preview of the process of noise reduction according to an algorithm dedicated to the chrominance and luminance.

Digital Photo Professional supports sRGB color space, Adobe RGB, Color Match RGB, Apple RGB and Wide Gamut RGB.

TIFF or JPEG images converted from RAW format can be applied Profiles ICC (International Color Consortium). This ensures accurate color reproduction in software that support ICC profiles, such as Adobe Photoshop. For greater efficiency, you can also save and apply multiple changes to multiple images at once.

EOS Utility
The new version of EOS Utility provides essential support for the control of the remote shooting, camera configuration and support for Live View remote implemented with further controls. Tightly integrated with Digital Photo Professional, EOS Utility can be configured to monitor specific folders, renaming and moving incoming images to a structured file system. Users can also tag their images with EXIF data, including information on copyright.

Picture Style Editor
Picture Style Editor enables users to create their own Picture Styles that meets their individual needs. Each Picture Style contains detailed information on how the image should be reproduced by following four basic parameters (saturation, contrast, sharpness and tone color) for countless “digital film”. Once you create a Picture Style, it can be loaded directly into the camera and applied to JPEG or RAW, noting the information in the tag file. By doing so you can implement beyond measure the creative aspect of their shots and drastically reduce the hours of work in post production.
