Digital Camera Buying Guide
Although simple to use, digital cameras are a real concentrate of technology. The user is not required to know and certainly understand their operation in detail: their main task is, in fact, allow even the least experienced of taking photographs of a high quality, easily and quickly.
Most digital cameras can recognize the faces of the subjects, automatically adjust the focus, balance any hand-shake and complement the colors depending on lighting conditions (sunlight, interior, etc.)..
1 – What is the digital camera for you?
• Economic Digital Cameras (Holiday Camera)
The “economic” camera does not necessarily mean “poor quality”. For a price that is around 150-200 USD, in fact, there are cameras easy to use (suitable for beginners of photography), but still offer many features. Sometimes, the results obtained from the entry-level cameras are comparable to those of models that cost 3 times as much. Admittedly, at this price, you will probably have to give up a sophisticated design (maybe you will have a plastic coating instead of metal) at wide angle and recording video in high definition, and opt for a diet alkaline batteries. We suggest, therefore, to invest in a good image stabilizer, which increases the possibility of achieving better picture quality, not stirred and more defined. Another aspect which ignore the savings is the display, which should be at least 2.5 inches.

• Cameras from the best value for money (Compact Camera)
By paying a little more you can buy a compact digital camera more beautiful, sturdy and with a broader envelope of advanced features and accessories (such as wide angle, greater responsiveness, etc.).. Usually the higher price end models also involve a smaller thickness of the device (2 cm below the cameras can even be carried in a pocket or purse). They can also boast a feature called “face detection” (automatic recognition of the faces of subjects) and autofocus, a display larger and higher resolution, or even be waterproof (this is not to be underestimated, especially if you end up in the hands of children ). On average, however, the picture quality obtained with this type of digital cameras is not overly better than that of the models a bit ‘cheaper. Without any doubt, however, the difference in price brings advantages in terms of definition of the picture, focus, etc..

• Zoom cameras by powerful ideal for landscapes and reportage trip (bridge)
For lovers of the great outdoors and the countryside could be disappointing to have to do with the zoom in a compact camera, usually no more than 5x. Cameras “bridge” are also arriving to show off a 26x zoom! This implies a disadvantage: these units are more bulky and less comfortable.
Some types of bridge cameras also offer advanced options typical of digital SLR cameras (or SLRs), as, for example, adjusting the depth of field, speed, etc.. As far as your camera will be performing, it is not yet able to read your mind and can not guarantee the effect you wish to see applied to your pictures (eg, a sense of dynamism, or just a blur in some parts of the image ). To do this simply by taking pictures in manual mode, adjusting the various shooting settings properly. This option is provided only on some advanced compact digital cameras, those with a powerful zoom (SLR Like) and digital SLR.
When asked “Why opt for a digital SLR or a camera with interchangeable lenses?” The answer is simple: “For the sensors. With the same resolution, in fact, the sensors are much better than those mounted on a compact. Are larger and have the advantage of capturing more light, which means cleaner picture. The digital SLR is also the fastest. In contrast, very few can boast the video function.

• Camera’s high performance and creativity (bridge, compact professional SLR)
Compact digital cameras and bridge are very practical and small, and uses small sensors, but subject to noise (image noise). Digital SLR cameras employ sensors rather larger and more sensitive (producing cleaner images) and also have larger lenses, a prerogative almost indispensable to achieve higher quality. A reflex is, therefore, more cumbersome, but this is the price to be paid for through your fingers a device that allows you to take pictures from the high level creative.

2 – What are the characteristics of a camera?
The key issues to consider
![]() |
Resolution The pictures are composed of millions of dots called pixels close together (eg 14 megapixel equivalent to 14 million pixels). There is no reason to exaggerate the resolution: 6 megapixels already able to ensure good picture quality and precision. Dealing with photos from more than 10 megapixel resolution will require a powerful computer to process the image in a relatively short time. |

Stabilizer Thanks to stabilize the camera offset any hand shake of the photographer, in order to significantly reduce the unpleasant effect that affects the so-called “camera shake”. Generally, for interior shots without flash, still cameras with image stabilizer produces 3 to 5 well-defined picture, while a device that does not have this feature, the quantity of photos did not turn probably reduces to 1. |

Waterproof A waterproof camera is very suitable for use in particular contexts, like the beach. Remember though that a coating resistant to shock and adverse weather conditions helped to raise the price of the camera, in some cases in a really significant. |
Additional features and functionality
![]() |
Wide The zoom value is usually expressed by a phrase such as “3x (equivalent to 35 – 105 mm). The lower the first digit in the range indicated (example 35), the greater the ability of the lens, the smaller the distance that will be held by the subject, this is a group of people or a landscape. You have wide angle lenses when the value at which we mentioned above is less than or equal to 28 mm. |
![]() |
Display A good display needs to be large enough to be legible (2.5 “is minimum) and enjoy a display resolution that even small details (never go below 230,000 pixels). To avoid are those that display when tilted or watched by special angles, tend to darken. |

Video resolution All compact cameras and DSLRs have the video capability. VGA is the shooting mode at least for those who want only to make shots only for fun. For more important occasions (the first steps of a child, a marriage) are recommended to other High Definition (HD), to 720 or 1080p. Frequency of 24 frames per second (FPS) provides a certain fluidity of recovery. |
![]() |
Digital zoom Do not even consider! Digital zoom is an invention of marketing and provides no practical benefit to the photos. The camera reworks the size of the image to enlarge it, but going to affect the overall quality of it. |
![]() |
Sensitivity The higher the value of the sensitivity, the better the camera when used for shooting in low light (nighttime, for example). |
![]() |
Format of digital photographs JPEG is the basic format of the images used practically everywhere: Internet, e-mail, presentations of images in sequence. The expert user can also work with the RAW format, available mainly in models of cameras top of the range. The RAW image file sizes are much higher than the simple JPEG, but offer a greater chance of image processing. |
3 – What accessories to buy for a camera?
• Memory card
Memory cards are simply that, years ago, were the film for analog cameras. Memory cards let you store 10, 100 or 1,000 photos, depending on their abilities. Except for some rare cases, the cameras are usually sold with some memory card supplied, but they have the size, nothing short of ridiculous, 16 or 32 MB. In the case of a 14-megapixel camera, this would be just enough to hold 3 or 6 photos. Ultimately, you are forced to buy additional memory cards. Their prices have fallen a lot lately, it is therefore necessary to choose at least a 2 GB memory card that stores up to 400 photos taken with a 14 megapixel camera.
• Memory card reader
Supplied with a digital camera is always receives a cable to transfer their photos to your computer. This operation, however, takes time. Equipping itself with a good memory card reader, the process of transferring photos is faster. Copy 1 GB of photos (around 200) directly from the camera via cable it takes around 6 minutes, while a good memory card reader (for the same quantity of photos) you will steal just 1 minute.
• Rechargeable
Although most digital camera manufacturers equip their cameras with internal rechargeable battery, specific for each model, there are still some models that use AA batteries. Always choose cameras with batteries of at least 1,800 mAh: any other battery power less lead time of autonomy for your camera quite scarce.
• Printers
To print your photos you can use the traditional darkroom or use the many online photo printing services. Alternatively, if strictly with the times, you may also print the photos yourself. A simple inkjet printer could be for you, even if the market offers specific photo printers. But remember: it is always better to use photo paper that is thicker than the standard and better results. The cost of printing “home” for an A4 photo hovering around EUR 1.20 (including ink). Certainly not little, but it is cheap enough (and certainly much faster) compared to development carried out at a specialized laboratory.
• Lenses
A SLR camera lens is usually sold with a base, which should be suitable for most common photographic applications. But if you want more, and aims to improve your photos, then you may need to buy additional lenses and lenses. What use they intend to do? It is for photographing portraits, small players in the foreground (such as insects) or, in general, capture the nature? Depending on how you do it, you’ll need a normal lens, a macrolens or a telephoto lens.
